Welcome to Madison City Chess League
MCCL began by meeting at the Rainbow Landing Clubhouse on July 22, 2013 and had 14 kids show up to play chess. In January 2014, we moved to the Madison YMCA, and our attendance continues to grow.
When: We meet on Monday nights from 6:30-8:00 p.m.
Where: Hogan Family YMCA, 130 Park Square Ln, Madison, AL 35758
Who Can Play: Primarily for kids K-12 who know how to play chess and want to play with others (we have enough boards for adults to play too). Adults can either join the YMCA or sign a waiver form in order to let your kids stay to play chess on Monday nights. Parents of children 12 and under must remain on the premises according to YMCA policy.
What Does It Cost: Free. However, we conduct an annual fundraiser for our host, the Hogan Family YMCA. We also welcome donations. Members can choose to pay annual dues of $20 in order to be voting members of the organization and support the mission of the organization. Voting members receive other benefits including early registration for chess camps and free or reduced rates for events for MCCL members only. To pay annual dues, follow this link to download a membership form.
Volunteers: Volunteer coaches serve as guest instructors on Monday nights. If you are interested in volunteering, contact Ranae Bartlett.
What if my child doesn't know how to play chess? The best way for your child to learn to play chess is to join a school chess club, sign up for summer chess camp, hire a private coach, or learn basics online or through a computer program. We recommend www.chesskid.com which provides free registration that allows access to articles, puzzles, and some videos and upgrades you can pay for as your child progresses in learning to play chess. Once your child knows the basics of playing chess, your child is welcome to attend MCCL meetings.
Tournaments: MCCL conducts chess tournaments throughout the year for both rated and unrated players. Most scholastic (K-12) chess tournaments require United States Chess Federation membership. Some tournaments in Alabama also require Alabama Chess Federation membership. Always check the tournament registration form and flyer to be sure you have the required memberships.
Benefits of Chess: Chess teaches analysis, logic and problem solving skills. Chess improves memory and concentration and teaches planning and foresight. Playing chess also teaches lessons such as perseverance and good sportsmanship. For more information about the benefits of chess, click here.
